Drop Frames ASI1600MMCool

#1

Post by donboy »

First few live stacks at 2min exposure and 300 gain I experience dropped frames after several stacks. I then uncheck the camera and recheck it and it usually works for the rest of the night . Sometimes it takes two repeated attempts of unchecking and rechecking the camera to eliminate dropped frames during live stack.

Hi Don,

Please post your log file - they contain info about what the cause of the dropped frames was (there are several possible causes that all get lumped under dropped frames).

cheers,

Hi Don,

sadly nothing about dropped frames in that log - it looks as though it is just a log of SharpCap starting up.

You will need to grab a log from SharpCap after you have been imaging and have seen dropped frames - in the log you will find lines with text like

Code: Select all

{lots of junk}: Dropped Frames : 17 of type [some type]
It's finding out what type of dropped frame is giving the most problem that will help narrow down the cause.

cheers,

Hi,

what I can see from that log is that the camera is failing to take the longer exposures - lines like

Code: Select all

Fetching still frame from ZWO camera failed with ExpFailed, exposure is 30000, timeout is 46500
That shows that a 30 second exposure failed and that the cause of the failure was somewhere in the ZWO SDK which is giving the ExpFailed error. I don't think there is anything from a SharpCap point of view that I can do to stop this from happening, but it may be worth you checking that your USB cables are as short as possible and that your Turbo USB setting is low - both of these help stability.

cheers,

Robin

Hi Don,
Not sure if this will help, but I was having a lot of dropped frames (20%) in just the preview (not even stacking).
I'm running under Windows 10 and it turns out that the OS will suspend the USB hubs to save power. This was causing me to have various issues, including the large number of dropped frames.

Dave sent me the following link on it: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-prev ... sb-devices

Disabling this feature seems to have solved the odd problems I was having as well as vastly improving my dropped frame rate.
Hope you solve it!

I also experienced dropped frames with my ASI1600MC-C on my Win 10 64-bit laptop, using the 64-bit beta version 3.2.5847.

From the log: "Fetching still frame from ZWO camera failed with ExpFailed, exposure is 1000, timeout is 6100"

This is with all USB power saving options disabled and Turbo USB setting is 40.

Hi,
That error code comes from the z w o SDK not from sharpcap. It's difficult to be sure what the causes but it's often a USB communication failure. Sounds like you've done all the right things to try and minimise this problem. We have to just keep an eye on this for now.

I found that an overloaded usb hub was also causing me some issues.

Can you download and run USBtreeView https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html and post back an image of the graphical USB representation on the left hand side?

That might tell us if there is something you might try disconnecting from your usb to get better results.
