Sync issues after Plate Solving

Hi Robin,

I’m having a couple of problems with syncing after plate solving as follows:

1. I first run a test with a simulator mount, and am able to successfully plate solve and sync. The new co-ordinates are copied successfully to the mount. It all works well.

2. I then try using my real mount (Skywatcher AZ-GTI (in alt-az mode) with the Windows Synscan app, after doing a proper alignment).
a. Sharpcap solves and the offset is within a few degrees. A sync is done and Sharpcap says it is successful. However, the co-ordinates aren’t updated.
b. ASCOM is functional as I can slew using the manual buttons in Sharpcap, and can also see the RA/DEC co-ordinates update in real-time.

3. I then tried using All Sky Plate Solver on it’s own as follows:
a. Use Sharpcap to take an image.
b. Load that image into All Sky.
c. Tell All Sky to connect to the mount.
d. Solve and sync. The co-ordinates are successfully updated on the mount. Sharpcap, All Sky, and the SynScan app all reflect the new co-ordinates.
e. There is a but with All Sky that slams ASCOM repeatedly asking for tracking to be turned on. This interferes with any future slewing and GOTOs… so I have to uncheck “connect mount” within All Sky once I finish the sync.

I’ve got everything working with All Sky and Sharpcap, however this involves a few extra steps. It would be great if SharpCap can do the solve and sync successfully in one go.

Secondly, is it possible for the user to configure SharpCap for solving beyond 15 degrees? Basically, going to Tools, Plate Solving allows for blind solves. Can Sharpcap do a blind solve, and then sync even if beyond 15 degrees? It would be a good feature to have when troubleshooting during the day from previous/old captured images.

Hi,

please can you post the SharpCap log showing one of the failed Solve-Sync-Goto sessions? I have some ideas about what might cause the problem but the log would help narrow down the possibilities. See https://docs.sharpcap.co.uk/2.9/#Bugs%20%26%20Crashes for details on how to find log files from previous runs of SharpCap.

Hi Robin,

Sure, will send over a log ASAP. I didn't bother last night because Sharpcap seems to think the sync was successful. I get the green info bar saying the mount was synced. However, the RA and DEC co-ordinates didn't update.

Furthermore, I've been chatting with the synscan developers and they found an issue with All Sky Plate Solver, where after a sync the app sends out instructions via ASCOM to turn tracking on... over and over and over, far too quickly. This causes interference and slewing and GOTOs are no longer possible until All Sky disconnects from the mount.

FYI - I've configured Sharpcap to use Astrotortilla for solving, while I'm using All Star as a standalone because Sharpcap isn't able to sync correctly at this time.

The log from Synscan is as follows when All Star starts hammering the mount asking it to set tracking ON:

Hi,

thanks for posting the info - one thing I notice is that SharpCap thinks you are located at 1.29N, 103.9E and is using those co-ordinates to transform the RA/Dec of the solved field into ALt/Az before trying to sync the mount. If those co-ordinates are wrong then the Alt/Az position may be wrong and the mount may reject the sync.

The second thing I am wondering is if the mount software itself is expecting the 'SyncToCoordinates' option to be used (which syncs to RA/Dec co-ordinates) rather than the SyncToAltAz which SharpCap uses when performing this function on an AltAz mount. Since you are using a mount that can be both EQ and AZ, I am wondering if the developers expected all syncs to be to RA/Dec even in AltAz mode.

The final thing I can think of is that some mounts reject Sync commands if they are not tracking - this may be part of the issue.

I think the next steps here would be for me to include some more diagnostic logging in this area for a future uptate of SharpCap 3.2 and then we could see if we can work out what is going on.

Hi Robin,

I can confirm that All Sky Plate Solver syncs do work. The co-ordinates are passed as RA/DEC (SyncToCoordinates), and not as AltAZ.

Furthermore, my lat/long seems correct. I've configured the mount to 1.17.55N and 103.51.28E. Not sure why that translates to 1.29N in the mount. I'll double check.

Lastly, the mount is tracking at sidereal when the sync commands are given. This is shown in Synscan, however it may be that this isn't the case in reality.

Hi,

One more consideration is that there are a couple of people who are using their AZ-GTI mount in EQ with SharpCap, and their syncs are working fine. This aligns well with your theory that the mount expects RA/DEC co-ordinates.

Hi,

please can you re-test with the latest SharpCap 3.2 beta build (3.2.5747) and send me the entire log from start to end. I have added some additional logging around the plate solve and also some extra logging when the mount is connected to capture some more info about it. I don't expect it to work, but it might help me work out how to tell the difference between an AltAz mount that requires SyncToAltAz and one that requires a normal Sync (trying to avoid having a user-set option here).
