I can't get SharpCap 4.0.79440 to work with Basler Pylon6

Post by Hibou »

I can use a Basler GigE acA 1920-40gm camera with Basler's Pylon6.1.1 64-bit drivers and viewer, but the camera is not recognised by either 32-bit or 64-bit SharpCap4.

With a similar FLIR GigE camera, I had to use 32-bit (or 64-bit) versions for both the Point Grey FlyCap and SharpCap software, but with Pylon6 that trick does not appear to work.

I suppose Robin doesn't have a recent Basler camera, but any suggestions would be welcome. Kind regards, Alan.

Hi,

I have only a rather old acA640-100gc GigE, which works nicely for me in both 32 and 64 bit versions of SharpCap with Pylon 6.1.1.19832 installed.

One thing to try is to select 'rescan for cameras' from the menu if you connect the camera after running SharpCap - SharpCap can detect USB device connect/disconnect events and rescan automatically, but with GigE cameras you have to rescan manually.

If you are still having no luck then please post a log - maybe some error is happening during camera detection, which should end up being recorded in the log.

thanks,

Robin

Thanks Robin. Re-connecting the Gig cable and rescanning for cameras did not help, even after rebooting :-) The log (attached) flagged the camera list as "invalid". This is with Pylon6.1.1.18345 64-bit. Curiously although the Pylon About me says its C++ SDK 6.1.1.18345 it also says Pylon viewer 6.2.0.8205 I am still working out how to install Pylon 32-bit since the installer doesn't give me that option on my 64-bit machine.
Alan.

And here is my log for 64-bit SharpCap4, which complains that my 64-bit CPU doesn't support AVX, but otherwise works. Alan.

Nothing exciting in the logs sadly - interesting that you have mixed versions of Pylon though - I just tried to install 6.2 and it gave me a warning to say that doing so might break my existing 6.1 install and that I should uninstall that first.

Anyway, now I have 6.2 installed I can't find cameras either, though I am unsure so far if that is because I failed to install the right bits of Pylon 6.2 or if there is some bug :( I wonder if I can reinstall 6.1 and see if it works again!

will keep looking!

Ah....

looks like Pylon 6.2 removes support for the SDK I was using :(

Code: Select all

* SDK: [164988] Removed the deprecated pylonC.NET API. If you're developing for the
       .NET platform, use pylon.NET instead.
https://www.baslerweb.com/fp-1615276057 ... otes~7.txt

I would try going back to a 6.1.x version (remove anything 6.2 related and reinstall 6.1.x) and see if that helps. I will have to evaluate how big a change the alternate SDK is. If it is a total rewrite from scratch then I may not be able to support Pylon 6.2 and above, since the usage levels for Basler cameras compared to the core Astronomy brands is very small :(

cheers,

Robin

Rhanks for your perserverence Robin. I uninstalled Pylon, reinstalled v6.1.1 and got both SharpCap4 32-bit and 64-bit to connect to the camera. But I'm still having trouble with flakey display, both in the Pylon Viewer and SharpCap. If I get it to work smoothly, I'll report back. Thanks again. Alan

It's all working ! And I'm not quite sure why :-) I uninstalled Pylon then reinstalled v6.1.1 (on a different computer), choosing the "Developer" option rather than "User". I don't know what difference if any that makes, but then both SharpCap 32-bit and 64-bit recognised the camera, and behaved perfectly. Except that although 12-bit images displayed, when they were saved as FITS, imageJ opened them as if perhaps the byte order was wrong. Curiously when I saved 12-bit packed images, they were saved and displayed correctly as 16-bit FITS files in imageJ.
So there are a few things I still have to experiment with, but it's all looking much better. In fact, the Python Viewer looked much more friendly once I realised that the "Features-Basic" is all that I really need (apart from software binning and filtering of isolated hot pixels :-)

Hi,

good to hear you have a working system. Odd about the byte order thing - I would have expected the order to be wrong on screen too if it is wrong in FITS files. Do other fits programs like fitsliberator display wrong too?

cheers,

Robin
