ASI224 white balance for DSO capture

#1

Post by cuivenion »

Hi, I'm using an ASI224 for capturing DSO's raw for stacking/processing later (traditional astrophotography). I usually leave the white balance set to default values and make sure it is'nt set to auto so it doesn't change. Is this right? Or should I have a certain value if I need to capture RAW for later processing?

Hi,

there are two schools of thought on this!

I suggest setting the colour balance to 50/50 (neutral) and then fixing the balance in post-processing. Others get good results by setting a reasonable white balance before capture.

Either way, make sure the settings are the same between darks and lights, and make sure that a saturated image pushes all 3 channels to the far right of the histogram with your WB settings (if you turn them down too far then you find that channel will not saturate, which can be a problem)
