Issues installing Canon DLR ASCOM drivers

#1

Post by DHclt »

I am trying to use my Canon 700D (Also known as the Rebel T5i) in sharpcap. As part of this pursuit I have been attempting to install the ASCOM drivers for the Canon DSLR. I found a post from Robin in cloudy nights from a few years ago saying that he successfully connected a Canon 700D with sharpcap using the ASCOM drivers. However, the key issue I am running into is that my antivirus software flags the install files as containing a virus.

My antivirus software is Bitdefender. Here is the error message it gave when blocking the virus install, with specific info on the which virus the ASCOM driver file contains:

The file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ASCOM\Camera\ASCOM.DSLR.Camera\is-GPBG1.tmp is infected with Gen:Variant.Bulz.186598. The threat has been successfully blocked, your device is safe.

Here is where I went to download the ASCOM DSLR driver files which were flagged as infected when I attempted to install:

https://github.com/FearL0rd/ASCOM.DSLR

Since this is open source development I'm sure it is quite possible that someone who has worked on the program at some point may have had a virus on their computer that became introduced within the driver files.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Hi,

the main discussion of the DSLR driver seems to happen on the cloudy nights thread, so it may be worth posting there: https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/7076 ... ntax-sony/

False positives are also a strong possibility – you could try uploading the installer or the dodgy file to somewhere like virus total to see what the 30 or 40 antivirus engines there make of it. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/

Cheers, Robin

I have recently installed the ASCOM DSLR drivers from the link in original post. This was on a machine running Windows 10 Professional with Defender, SmartScreen and MalwareBytes. There was never any indication of the presence of malware when testing a Canon 7D Mk2 using SharpCap 3.3 beta.

The file mentioned is not present on my system and indeed from its extension looks to be a temporary file. When running a capture, no extra files are created in the ASCOM.DSLR.Camera folder. My installation has 23 items in that folder - 2 sub-folders and 21 files.

I would start by trying to establish when the temp file is created. This might give some clue into helping to track down what looks to me like a local problem.
