New idea for polar alignment

#1

Post by Ddaniel84 »

Hi Robin
I just tested SC Polar Alignment procedure..without success. It's complicated to have enough stars and to rotate the telescope. At the same time I used an astrometry on Polar Star. Efficient, fast..simple! The stars are quickly recognized. And the mount is brought very precisely to Polar Star.
What do you think about this proposal as new PA procedure:
To perfectly align the mount on the polar axis, it seems to be sufficient to indicate what correction vector given by astrometry has to be applied in order to perform the polar alignment manually moving mechanically the mount.
That seems to ASPA procedure from CPWI (Celestron)
.but without doing an astrometry . The procedure is easy but the result is approximative.
What do you think of that?

Hi Dominique,

unfortunately, that technique doesn't work, although it does get suggested from time to time. The problem is that using that approach you are making the telescope point at the pole (or more precisely the optical axis from the centre of the camera image sensor through the telescope ends up pointing towards the pole). For polar alignment, you actually need the RA axis of the telescope mount to be the thing that is aligned with the pole. Even with careful setup, there's likely to be a significant deviation (a degree or more is not uncommon) between the telescope axis in the home position and the RA axis of the mount.

Cheers, Robin

Thanks for these explanations.. it would be too fine!
Bravo for this V 4version!
