Filters with Hypercam 183c and brain function

#1

Post by Astro Geezer »

Hi.
I'm wondering if, after using the Sharpcap brain, using dual band filters is even feasible?

Should I just use the Optolong L-pro filter instead?

The brain suggests, when I use the IDAS NBZ filter, that it cannot provide me a solution under 5 minute exposures with gain at 5000.
So, I adjusted the setting to 6 minute exposures at 5000 gain and the results with the Hypercam didn't even come close to when I used to use a DSLR, and ampglow was horrific.

Am I barking up the wrong tree using a dual band with the Hypercam? Or is the brain function not working correctly?

Hi,

what sky background brightness value do you measure? If the dual band filter is doing a good job of blocking the light pollution then it's reasonable that the recommendations should be for long exposures., but 5 minutes or more at 50x (5000) gain seems very long.

Perhaps if you send a screenshot of the 'brain' window showing the measurement value and the recommendation then something might show that explains it.

Thanks Robin.
I'll sort out a screenshot when I next get a clear sky!

It surely can't be right. After nearly two hours there was barely any workable data.
I wondered if the IDAS NBZ was just too strong for the sensor...

....I had the "read noise limit" set to 1% and it made a vast difference.

Now the settings are 600 seconds at 1200 gain which is workable!

Ah, that would make sense! Glad you have it sorted.
