start/finish times and gps info in avi

#1

Post by darkboonies »

Hi Robin,
I am recording avi files for occultation timing with the qhy174-gps in SC 3.1.
A gps window opens on top of the SC screen. It shows lat/lon that seem correct. The window also shows start time and finish time but those numbers do not change while recording.

The avi playback does not show any gps or time data.

Question 1, how do I get the start and finish times in the gps window to work?
Question 2, how do I get the lat/lon and start/finish time to show in the avi playback?

Thanks Warren

Hi Warren,

my first advice would be to use SER files for capturing not AVI. SER files have a timestamp for each frame and if you have the GPS running and locked then those timestamps will be the GPS timestamps (to be precise the GPS timestamp for the frame start). FITS format will also store accurate GPS time info.

The scond thing is the start/end times in the GPS window - those are the start and end times for the most recent captured frames and don't have anything to do with capture start/end. They are there just so you can see if the GPS is working correctly - they should update with each new frame.

hope this helps,

Robin

Robin, I got a ser recording. that is great. SerPlayer plays it back ok. The ser header does not show the gps coordinates. Chris at serplayer suggested that the ser header does not provide the gps data in the header. does sharpcap store the gps data in another file?

The time start and finish shows in the header but the start & finish times are the same.
does it look to you that SC is stamping each frame with the same time stamp? Please see the enclosed SS. what can you suggest? thanks warren

Full GPS info is saved to FITS files, but I would have expected the timestamps to be correct in SER - I will have to check that.

thanks,

Hi,

SER has very little scope for metadata apart from frame timestamps (which out to work).

cheers,

I will not be ready for Patientia but I am getting close. Perhaps as early as the 11th for Roma. I could not have gotten even this far with out your IOTA west help. Alex @ Stellarvue. Bruce at Astrofactors, Chris @ SER player ,IOTA, Robin @ SharpCap and Russell @ Losmandy have all provided great support.
Thank you, Warren
