Maximum fps for ASI-174MM

#1

Post by vk4tnt »

Hi,
Last night I was testing my ASI-174MM and discovered that the maxumum fps I could get capturing full frame images was about 128 fps. That corresponds to the maximum speed for the camera's 12 bit ADC. Using the 10 bit ADC the camera is supposed to be able to capture 164 fps.
I could not find any setting where I could change between the two. Could you please advise if this is an otion?
Thanks in advance,
Renato

Hi,

to get above 128fps, on the 174MM/MC you need to be in 8 bit mode (RAW8/MONO8), have the 'High Speed Mode' control set to 'On' and have the the turbo USB control turned up too.

cheers,

Robin

Hi Robin,
Thanks for the quick answer. So, what ZWO is advertising in the camera's specifications is not correct?

Supported resolution
Binning 1×1:
12bit ADC:
1936X1216@128FPS
640×480@309FPS
320×240@577FPS

10bit ADC:
1936X1216@164FPS
640×480@397FPS
320×240@740FPS

Hi,

the ZWO specs are correct - the 'High Speed Mode' switch is what puts the camera into 10 bit ADC mode.

cheers,

Robin

Thanks everyone, I still have limitations. I wonder if I can speed up by using a dedicated USB3 card.

Hi,

most add in USB3 cards tend to be slower than the USB3 ports that are directly attached to the motherboard. This is because the add-in card usually only has a single PCI E lane (1x), which doesn't have enough bandwidth to cope with the maximum USB3 bandwidth. PCIe 4x USB3 cards are rare (and not always clearly labelled)...

Cheers, Robin
