Format of Darks question

#1

Post by howardgrams »

Hi Robin,

I just noticed that all of the Darks I take are saved in .png format instead of .fits format. This seems to happen even if I turn off Auto for Output Format and specifically specify .fits output format, and seems to happen for both RAW8 and RAW16 color space.

But the Sharpcap 3.2 User Manual section on darks always talks about .fits files for darks.

Does it matter whether darks are saved as .png instead of .fits?

Regards,

Hi,

I think this is using the file format that is selected as the default still file format in the options. See

https://docs.sharpcap.co.uk/3.2/#General%20Tab

Hi,

If you're just going to use the darks within SharpCap for dark subtraction then it doesn't matter – SharpCap can save and load 16-bit image data from both FITS and PNG files without any loss of information.

Cheers, Robin
