Hi,
There is something I might not be getting with Smart Histogram's Brain. If Brain gives the best equivalents for exposure based on the background sky, how does that square with the need to have exposure blending with high dynamic range targets. For example M42 really needs two exposures, (maybe even three); one to capture the Trapezium and at least another much longer one for the rest of the object, particularly the faint outer edges.
What am I missing?

The brain calculation is optimising for the faintest parts of the image – those just above or even below the brightness level of the sky background. That means that the brain's results would be the ones that you would use for the longest exposures in your HDR stack. For the brighter areas of the image you use shorter exposures because you don't care so much about noise in the dark areas of those images is the HDR process will ignore the fainter areas of the short exposure images.
