Saving video in FITS format

#1

Post by daim »

hello everyone,

I am using QHYCCD5-III and for my research, I need to save my video in FITS format. but SharpCap only allows me to save still image in FITS. Is there a setting to save video as FITS? or anyway i can "stitch" the still frame together? thank you so much

P/S; the computing software that I use requires to have FITS file so its very important to have FITS format video.

Hi,

SharpCap only supports putting one frame in each FITS file. FITS file writing is very slow compared to video formats like AVI and SER, so it's not usually considered suitable for video capture. However, if you do tell SharpCap to start capturing while fits is selected it will save a sequence of FITS frames for you.

You may be able to use tools to convert the individual FITs frames into a single file - I usually use 'PIPP' for this sort of task, although I don't know if it creates FITs video files - it would certainly be worth trying.

cheers,

Robin

I tried this out. Download PIPP from https://sites.google.com/site/astropipp/.

The test:
  • Drag and drop 250 FITS files onto the PIPP Source Files tab, there is a message about using Join Mode.
  • On Output Options tab, select SER as the output format.
  • On Do Processing tab, click Start Processing , took 20 seconds to process.
The result was a single SER video file which could be played using the PIPP SER Player https://sites.google.com/site/astropipp/ser-player.

The log output:
Summary:
PIPP version: v2.5.9
Total input frames: 250
Total output frames: 250:
Output Frame Type: Monochrome
Output Frame Format: SER
Output Directory: E:/SharpCap Captures/2017-01-20/Capture/21_44_18/rawframes/pipp_20170602_091243/

Hope this helps.

Is there a way to keep it in FITS format? as in converting the 2D sequence into a single FITS cube in 3D?
