FX Selection for Smart Histogram Brain?

When using the Smart HIstogram Brain function to determine optimal gain and exposure settings, is it best to use the FX Selection tool and select an area without any stars? Also, if this is the case, is there a minimum area that must be selected?

Yes, use the FX selection tool - it is the right thing to do. I'd suggest an area at least 50 pixels on each side.
