Automatic ROI shift

#1

Post by aquariusCZ »

I take pictures of the moon with a dobson.
By manually shifting the ROI. I can capture 1000 images per ROI (1/3 image).
An automatic shift (right) would be useful.
At the same time, it would be good to start Quick Capture.

Practical design:
START button - start of capture + start of ROI on the opposite side of the chip.
Editing window TIME - delay between ROI shift (ms)
Editing window SHIFT - jump ROI (4,8,16,32, .. pixels)
TEST button - ROI movement without capturing.

End of capture after reaching the ROI of the chip.
After saving the sequence, the ROI would return to its original position on the edge of the chip.

All Dobsonists will love this function. :D
Photographing the Planets and the Moon would be easy for them. ;)

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion – one consideration here is that I think only ZWO cameras managed to move the ROI around without the camera stuttering or freezing momentarily, which would be somewhat frustrating for users of other cameras.

Thank you for your response.
I have been using stabilization with manual ROI movement for several years.
Works nicely with QHYIII290, QHYIII178C and ASI224MC.
However, due to inaccurate manual movement, I lose part of the image.
I believe that the jump and capturing algorithm will be optimized for different cameras.

The feature would attract thousands of new astroamateur (Dobson owners) to planetary photography.

Hi,

Well, since I've just written code for atmospheric dispersion correct alignment that finds the centre point of the target such as a planet, it might turn out to be not too hard to reuse that for the ROI tracking that you are describing.

Hi,
planetary disk image analysis - automatic evaluation of ROI motions is a great idea.
Can the analytical algorithm also work with the Moon Surface or other targets?
I did not hope for such advanced fully automatic stabilization using ROI movement.

Hi,

It could be possible. There is already a feature tracking option in SharpCap, but that attempts to use the Ascom mount or ST4 guider control to track image features. ROI tracking is easier because you don't need to start by working out which direction the image moves for the different mount direction movements.

This image was taken by manual movement of the ROI.

1.5.2020 21:19 Alphonsus - 111 km
Image
dobson 255/1200, Barlow 3x, QHY5III290M, orange filter, on-chip stabilization: ROI movement,
300 images out of 1000, AS3 + R6 + PaintNet, reduced,
seeing very good.

Good detail in the crater floors. With a 3x Barlow your seeing must have been really good.
