Re: El Cheapo Reducer
Hi, Impressive! Amazed that you located it with such a narrow field-of-view. Here is what I suggest: Your gain is way too high. That's why you lost star color. At Gain 400 the Full Well Depth (FWD) of each pixel is only around 300 electrons (e-). At that gain, stars almost instantly saturate. I'm lo...

When do you think you can share some of your photos in SharpCap's Gallery?

Re: Smart histogram short exposures
Hi Robert, You made a wise choice buying a fast RASA-8. Everyone would agree that 2-second exposures have multiple advantages over slower instruments: 1. Shorter recovery from passing aircraft and satellites. 2. Little need for the complexities of auto-guiding including the extra cost of a guide cam...

Re: Smart histogram short exposures
Hi Robert, Sure but this image of M13 isn't a nebula, however, it does show stars down to 20th magnitude which is pretty impressive given the short exposures I used: M13_2022-04-18_R-600x6s_G-600x6s_B-R-0.1_ST-0.00045_BA-0.01875_HL-0_SAT-0.22_TH-0.0_SH-1.5_PRO-5.jpg I have a 71mm f/5.9 refractor so ...

Re: Reasonable Expectations
I agree with Robin that your focus looks soft. In the past I've tried Bahtinov masks but I never liked that I needed a bright star. I had to slew a distance away to find one and then return to my target. Also since I have a mono camera I'm always changing filters, and the focal point changes between...

Re: Smart histogram short exposures
Hi Robert, It is your sky brightness that limits how deep you can see. You can't "force it" by using long exposures. It's better to integrate 30 two-second exposures than take only one 60-second exposure. Why? On the one extreme with a long exposure the sky might saturate your sensor and y...

Re: Smart histogram short exposures
Ultra-fast scope, sensitive camera, bright skies, 1.5s sounds about right. What do your stacks look like?

Re: Heads up Dr. Glover
Definition of "heads up":
I saw the headline/subject then read your post but still can't find any warning of incoming flack.heads-up (plural heads-up or heads-ups) (chiefly US, idiomatic) A warning or call to pay attention; an advisory notice; a notice of what is to happen; a holler.
