Re: M42 chronicles
This will help in choosing a camera that meets requirements in terms of FOV and resolution. The resolution is a guide, very widefield images will be over 2 and still good. The FOV is your first concern. 20meg cameras sound great on paper or if you are used to daytime photography. Forget megapixels. ...

Re: M42 chronicles
Don, I see many folks having similar issues. Unfortunately cameras with a 5s max exposure get sold as astro cams. If sensitive enough 5s is plenty for use as a guide camera. A camera with a 5s max exposure though will give you a hint of what is up there. It will never get you a nice DSO image. Very ...

Re: Auto exposure and Altair 290M
Robin, Put the 290M back in my dome last night. Downloaded the latest version of 3.2 Set auto exposure. It chose 13.1 sec which gave a reasonable histogram at about 10pm. Started a 12hr capture of .ser Re checked at 11pm. Histogram was low, exposure not changed from 13.1s Stopped sharpcap. Restarted...

Wrong file format selection
Altair or ZWO camera Save profile after deselecting auto file format and choosing .ser Re open sharpcap, reload the saved profile and sometimes it chooses fits instead of the file type in use at the time of pressing save Preference set to .ser for video and fits for stills. Also, sometime after maki...

Re: Auto exposure and Altair 290M
Thanks Robin, that sounds good for All Sky use. Especially in day time or if the moon is up average exposure for the majority of the fov works best. Speed of change is less critical. Out of interest, how does it choose an exposure value, from the mid point of the histogram after any user limits are ...

Re: Auto exposure and Altair 290M
Update. I bought a ZWO 224mc
The auto exposure works well with this. Self adjusts between bright light and darkness.
Seems to be an issue with Altair cams as see another user of a gcam has the same problem.

Auto exposure and Altair 290M
Nothing in the manual about this. Tick the box but the histogram still shrivels away as light fades on my all sky dome.
What should it be doing / how is it activated and set up?
Thanks Rob

Re: All Sky settings
The dome placed outside for testing. Sat in a bucket but will add legs after testing done.
