Re: Windows 11

Thanks Robin. I appreciate your expertise. My searches turned up similar advice. I’m expanding my search for a more capable but mid-priced laptop that comes with Windows 10 pro that can update to 11 when forced to. If I settle on the value priced one in 11 S mode I will for sure take your advice. Cl...

Re: Windows 11

Thanks Robin. This is very helpful. Unfortunately my Win 10 laptop died. Purchase of a new one includes Windows 11, so at some point in the near future I will be making this upgrade. One more question though: The laptops I reviewed all run Win 11 in “S” mode which apparently includes security featur...

Re: Jupiter & Saturn, optimistic imaging

Thanks. I realize the scope helps, but I could not have done this without SharpCap so Many Thanks 😊 Damian has taught us much, so I’m grateful for seeing his work. Thanks for sharing. Indeed, in this case the mountain top is a great assist to see lower in elevation with less ground heat turbulence b...

Re: Jupiter & Saturn, optimistic imaging

I’ve finally reviewed all the 30-sec quick captures from Dec 20 and find most have too much turbulence even for PIPP. One is good, so here it is. This image is the result of 30 seconds SER 16-bit RAW video at a single fast 5 milliseconds per frame exposure, captured via SharpCap, processed in PIPP f...

Re: Jupiter & Saturn, optimistic imaging

Merry Christmas Dave and to all on the site. I’m not a programmer, but it seems PIPP does a better job selecting best frames with turbulent image data than Autostakkert does. They seem to give similar results if there is less turbulence. After PIPP I used Autostakkert to select and stack 50% best fr...

Re: Jupiter & Saturn, optimistic imaging

Nice work Dave. Great initiative & drive to give it a go at 5-deg elevation. Here at 42-deg N location the planets were at 23-deg elevation at 1600 local time, setting fast to 17-deg 1-hr later. I set up my scope before sunset and did a 2-star alignment of my Starmaster dob on Polaris and Altair...

Re: M33 under smoky skies

M33 is indeed a challenge for brightness in images. Smoky skies cleared for one beautiful night when I could make it to our club “dark sky” site - Bortle 4 - much better than my home suburban Bortle 7 sky. M33 was one of several galaxies I was able to capture with SharpCap pro livestack 75 frames, 7...

Re: Does stacking alignment accuracy ever limit sharpness?

Tim - I found this couple year old Andromeda image I took at a dark sky site near me. Unguided single image with Canon T3i DSLR and 200mm f4 Canon FD lens, all riding piggyback on my Starmaster Dob. So this shows the tracking accuracy with no help from guiding or SharpCap stacking. It is a 120 secon...

Re: Does stacking alignment accuracy ever limit sharpness?

Hi Tim, Thanks for the excellent detailed description. I appreciate your taking the time to describe the equipment and approaches you are taking. Perfection is great to seek as its the driver for improvement in capabilities. I thank Robin every time I use SharpCap for its current capabilities and lo...

Re: Does stacking alignment accuracy ever limit sharpness?

Hi Tim, What Dob are you using? Perhaps I’m lucky with my Starmaster or my criteria aren’t as strict, as I’ve been successful with up to 90 seconds exposure per frame. Qualifier: This is for objects from about 30-70 degrees altitude. Performance is poor towards the zenith or horizon so I don’t even ...
