Re: M63 Sunflower Galaxy

Thanks, Menno. I have two computers: a laptop running Ubuntu where I run APP, and a desktop where I run Affinity Photo. The laptop's monitor is "warm" and the desktop's monitor is "cold". I tried but I can't calibrate them to a single standard. So, the final step is iterative. I ...

M63 Sunflower Galaxy

It took three nights to capture but should have only taken two. My 50-year-old mount is "acting up". Time for its annual DIY HyperTune: strip it down, soak the gears in de-greaser, lube it up, and re-assemble. This is its last photo before going into dry-dock: M63_W12-90x90s-b1_R-64x90s-b1...

Re: M51 Two Images Two Nights

Hi Menno, Good, but are both approaches equally valid in your situation? I understand what he is saying, but he is assuming that you have very dark skies. This is why raising gain works when capturing narrowband. The narrowband filter almost cuts your LP to zero. Unfortunately you don't have that sa...

Re: M51 Two Images Two Nights

Menno, This is how I see the problem: IFN formula.jpg At cell B1, I am giving you the benefit of the doubt that your Bortle class is halfway between Bortle 7 and 6. At cell B2, I am giving us the benefit of the doubt that the IFN's surface brightness is 25 mags per square-arcsec. At cell B4, we use ...

Re: M51 Two Images Two Nights

Menno, Ah yes, I see the IFN is much brighter up there. Maybe I'll give that a try. The trick is to find a FOV that has a filament structure with light and dark areas. If you choose a region that is just solid nebula, then you won't be able to distinguish LP from the IFN. The author of that image at...

Re: M51 combine two sessions + bonus M63

Nick, I had version 1.8.5. I just installed 1.9.2. Now I see the Astrophotography Persona. I'll give it a try. Just looking at the panels, it looks as if it supports OSC, but I wonder about LRGB? Complicating matters, now I do W12RG instead of LRGB. However, I have plenty of old LRGB sessions that I...

Re: M51 combine two sessions + bonus M63

Hi Nick, Affinity Photo is an incredible bargain at $25 (last I checked). So far, I've just used it for standard post-processing tasks. I need to update to the latest version that came out a few weeks ago. My version doesn't have an Astrophotography Persona, at least not to my knowledge. Thanks, Brian

Re: M51 Two Images Two Nights

Hi Menno, In this photo of M81/M82/IFN, I indicated the position of HIP 46977. Is the dense part of the IFN above the top boundary of the image? I was planning on the area within the red rectangle. A few days ago I searched the InnerWeb for discussions of the IFN, and particularly surface brightness...
