Re: Altair Hypercam 533C
Hi Robin, Thank you very much for your reply! Your explanation makes sense to me with respect to the ease of use for many users. My question wasn't meant to be a critique and I hope you didn't understand it as such. Otherwise, my apologies! So, if I understand the previous posts correctly, the HCG f...

Re: Altair Hypercam 533C
Hi Robin, Why is the switch between LCG and HCG done automatically? So, when SharpCap turns the HCG on, what exactly happens in the „sensor driver“? My understanding is that from gain 100 to 300, the „internal“ gain ist set to the gain setting with HCG off. From 300+, the internal gain setting is se...

Re: Picking the correct exposure for Deep Sky
Hi Robin, Thanks for clarification. I'll try getting a bit more of physical background of read noise. I don't want to spill this topic with other issues, so please let me know if I should move this to a different thread: your making the point of swamping the read noise to which I fully agree. I'm st...

Re: Picking the correct exposure for Deep Sky
Hi Robin, I guess the question if something is Poisson is not the most important aspect here. The justification would anyways be done if the underlying process is about rare events. In the limit, the Poisson distribution converges into a normal distribution. My question is indeed what to understand ...

Re: Picking the correct exposure for Deep Sky
Hi, I'm having some confusion here about the read noise. As stated in the beginning, we can safely assume that the read noise follows a Poisson distribution. Say that this distribution has an expectation value of lambda and therefore, the variance is lambda (and standard deviation sqrt(lambda), whic...

Re: Sensor Analysis on CCD
Hi Robin,
Thank you for your reply!
Since there is no gain adjustment, I assume that the sensor analysis will report only a single line with the measured values of read noise, FWD?

Sensor Analysis on CCD
Hi, I'm wondering if there's a point in doing a sensor analysis on a CCD camera? These cameras (an Atik 428EXm specifically) usually don't have gain and/or offset settings (at least so it appears to me). Therefore, I would assume I could simply use the values given by the manufacturer for exposure c...

Re: ZWO ASI178MM Sensor analysis.
Hi Neil, What I did to analyse my AA183M is to take an iPad as light source. I placed the camera directly on the screen. To be able to play with the intensities, I created a few gray scale images (100%, 50% and 25% luminance) and if I had to reduce brightness even further, I placed one or two sheets...

Re: Sharpcap 3.1 AA183M sensor analysis for Gain/offset/exposure time
Hi Robin, Thank you for your reply! I didn't notice the difference of the axis's scaling until you mentioned it. Although I didn't go for the graphs to compare but for the plain numbers. So after all, I assume my first measurement had issues and probably was connected to the light source (iPad setti...
