Re: Picking the correct exposure for Deep Sky
Hi, I keep coming back to the post in this thread because they are, in my opinion, an excellent piece of information, useful for a lot of things. However, it is somewhat counterintuitive to the usual practice and sometimes doubts arise. If I understood correctly, if the minimum subframe exposition i...

Dark Nebulas Detection - Integration time and subexposures
Hello everyone, It is often seen people taking longer subexposures to detect dark structures (eg. M78), tipically at least 5 min. However, reading Dr. Robin Glover detailed explanation in this forum about picking the correct exposure, the best SNR for a given total integration time is achieved with ...

Flat Frames and Gain Noise
Dear Mr. Robin, All literature that I see besides SharpCap mention that flat frames should be taken at the same ISO/gain than the light frames, albeit only in a Jon Rista post (https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/583210-flats-for-each-gain-setting-with-asi1600/?p=7976887) I could find an explanation ...

Re: ZWO294 MC Pro best gain
Mr. Robin, Thanks for your feedback. Actually I was wondering if the dynamic range of the sky area could also play here, as if I don't have bright stars, maybe I could sacrifice some dynamic range in exchange of some read noise. If not, them probably I would need all the DR I could get and set gain ...

Re: ZWO294 MC Pro best gain
Hi, gain 120 is a good starting point – that's where the camera switches from low conversion gain to high conversion gain which means the read noise drops dramatically from gain 120 upwards. The SharpCap pro smart histogram feature will help you with more detailed suggestions Cheers, Robin Hello, W...

Re: Image postprocessing and Smart Histogram
<r>Hello Menno555,<br/> <br/> Thanks for the feedback. Actually I use also a Zwo ASI294MC Pro and so that's good news. <E>:)</E> In my first try I found very difficult the properly stretch but then, after writing my post, I found that the conversion from 32-bit to 16-bit done by DeepSkyStacker was t...

Image postprocessing and Smart Histogram
Hello everyone, Does anyone have any comparative experience in post-processing images using the suggested settings of Smart Histogram (tipically lower exposure time and gain) and images using more "common" settings, with exposures up to 5 min and higher gains? For what I see, in the first ...
