Re: Spectrum of the Ring Nebula

Tim,

Interesting. The red/blue shift was the explanation given in the 1970s, as best I can remember. Science does evolve!

Re: Spectrum of the Ring Nebula

Hi Tim, Centuries ago when I was a teenager, I built a spectrograph for my telescope using a grating and some simple optics. My first subject was Vega. The Ha absorption band was very broad. It indicates that the atoms are super-heated, and bouncing around at high velocity, some moving towards us an...

Spectrum of the Ring Nebula

An interesting NASA APOD today: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap210721.html The identity of the three rings: Left side: Ha + NII Middle: OIII Right side: Normal visual appearance OIII is very strong in Planetary Nebulae, even stronger than Ha in many cases. However, OIII tends to be weak in regular Emi...

Re: automatic choice of the best dark

Back a couple years ago when I used an uncooled mono cam for AP, on cloudy nights I would set up the scope to capture darks all night. The next day, I'd group the frames by temperature. Often times it would take several nights to accumulate at least 30 frames per temperature. And of course, this is ...

Re: Color Space, Bit Depth, and Exposure Time

Hi David,

Total Exposure (aka Total Integration Time) will never burn out whites. What will burn out whites, if you're not careful, is your Per Frame Exposure. The process of stacking frames is to "push back" the noise, not to grow highlights.

Re: Questions about Japanese localization of SharpCapUserManual

I agree with Watanabe san, the "の" is awkward. There are two cases where "の" should be used: (1) when showing possession, and (2) when showing hierarchy. But in each case, "の" glues together nouns, pronouns, or noun phrases. In the original document "run recently u...

Re: Photometry and Spectroscopy

Bob,

The AAVSO has software, but I use AstroImageJ (free). What's neat is that you can set it up to automatically calibrate frames when they arrive from your data capture software (SC), perform photometry and plot the star's light curve.

Re: Photometry and Spectroscopy

Hi Bob, I've done quite a bit with Variable Stars and Exoplanets. I recommend starting with a question: Am I in it to have fun, or to be serious? By serious I mean measuring magnitudes with such precision that your data can be combined with other people's data. And by fun I mean that capturing the s...

Re: Questions about Japanese localization of SharpCapUserManual

Internationalization is a large undertaking. It's been 2 weeks since I started translation of my web app to support Japanese, French, and German. I figure one or two more days of work. The most important lesson I learned is to reject the use of jargon if at all possible. For example, when I began wr...
