Re: Resolving the core of the catseye. Lucky imaging maybe?

Hi Mike, Nice pictures at astrobin. M27 especially. Yes you are right of course. Lots of very good Dob astrophotos out there. By my comment I meant only that - as a newbie starting on astrophotography a couple of years ago - the stuff that I would read in magazines and in expert online articles led ...

Re: PA with a dobsonian

Just as a general and somewhat philosophical query does anyone ever get fully consistent PA alignment? With my CEM70 equatorial mount set up I often start out with what appears to be near spot on PA according to the ipolar camera. However this perfect PA alignment only accurately applies to the RA s...

Re: Spectrum of the Ring Nebula

Hi Brian, That was a good project for a lad..unfortunately as a teenager my hobby was chemistry and I used to make explosives - until a short stay in hospital cured me of that and I switched to amateur electronics and radio which was less destructive. Your mention of Doppler line broadening led me t...

Re: Spectrum of the Ring Nebula

Interesting picture Brian. I have noticed that you can buy a diffraction grating eyepiece

https://www.rspec-astro.com/star-analyser/

and have wondered how well it would perform in practice. Could be interesting comparing carbon stars with types O and A etc?

Re: ASI294MC Pro Cooler ?

Hi, I also have an ASI 294MC . In my experience the fan only comes on when you a) connect the camera to a 12v power supply (upon which the red light comes on) and b) when it is then also connected by USB to a computer. Thereafter the fan stays on. Sharpcap being open or not has no effect on the oper...

Re: Resolving the core of the catseye. Lucky imaging maybe?

Hi Mike, Yes indeed many thanks for that link. 23 is really going some! Above was my first foray into this interesting area. Since I have been working systematically to define the window that works best in terms of sampling rate, gain, F number and subframe exposure time for my particular 8 and 10 i...

Save all option in livestack

Hi Robin, Livestack provides the options of saving all the raw files or only those that were stacked. If it were simple to do it would be great if the option to save all the files could append a searchable a tag onto the files used in the stack. I use the FWHM filter to make a hard selection (reject...

Re: Lunar UV/IR cut + Wratten #25 filters

Dave, Astonishingly good. Your best yet?

The top image really captures something about how high some of the lunar peaks and mountains are because the curvature of the moon provides a sense of scale. In the bottom image the resolution of detail must be as good as a mile and a half or so?

Star shape/ eccentricity warning?

Hi Robin SC already calculates FWHM on the fly during livestacking. I guess - and I think that you have mentioned? - that Eccentricity is inherent to the same calculation if FWHM is averaged across orthogonal directions It could also be useful to display that information - if only just as a warning ...

Re: Sharpcap seems to want its own instance of eqmod?

Hi, I had the selfsame issue - the same mount in fact -when I first started using Sharpcap and the solution was simply to always start with SC as the first program loaded and then let everything add in from SC ...e.g. setting the hardware tab so that the EQmod mount and focuser etc are loaded after ...
