Polar alignment - finder scope vs guide scope

Hello,
I am going to try the polar alignment feature and the instructions say to use a "finderscope" but I think we really want a guide scope with no inherent magnification. Is this correct?

Thanks as always.

Re: Dedicated guide scope for plate solving

Thanks for the reply, Yes I was thinking maybe a slightly longer focal length might be a little better.

Dedicated guide scope for plate solving

Hello I do alot of spectroscopy so my primary OTA can't be used for plate solving as it has a spectroscope/grating installed. So I was planning on piggybacking a small guide scope for plate solving only. I can't think of any reason why this wouldn't to work. I was planning on using 50mm f3.2 or a 30...

Re: Unable to stack

Hmmm...Interesting...I was trying to get some better detail on small targets and was going for a much smaller image scale. But it was also failing when using a 0.63 FR which should have improved it. It did do much better with my 294 which has 4.63 um pixels. Well I have learned alot during all this....

Re: Unable to stack

Re: Unable to stack

Hello All, I had another go at this using alot of your suggestions. I have verified that my focus is pretty good using both the bahtinov and the FWHM tools, I played with the max star width (min 2 to max 32) and the black point quite a bit. I was able to make some progress but nothing, other than go...

Re: Unable to stack

Hi Robin,
Thanks for the quick response. Interesting about the focus because I was using a b-mask but I did switch back and forth with the focal reducer so I probably didn't refocus well between switches.
Thanks
